Overview

The Department of Sports Physiotherapy at BVVS College of Physiotherapy is committed to fostering excellence in the field of sports and exercise rehabilitation through high-quality education, clinical expertise, and applied research.
The department plays a vital role in promoting injury prevention, performance enhancement, and rapid recovery among athletes at all levels — from amateur to professional.

The department focuses on:

  • Prevention, diagnosis, and management of sports-related injuries.
  • Enhancing athletic performance through evidence-based exercise and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Promoting awareness about sports safety, conditioning, and ergonomics.
  • Developing advanced skills in physiotherapy through scientific research and field training.

Teaching Programmes

The Department of Sports Physiotherapy actively contributes to both Undergraduate (BPT) and Postgraduate (MPT – Musculoskeletal & Sports Physiotherapy) programs.

The curriculum is designed to develop skilled clinicians who can assess, prevent, and manage sports injuries using scientific principles of biomechanics, exercise physiology, and sports science.

1. Core areas covered:

  • Sports injury prevention and management.
  • Exercise physiology and kinesiology in sports.
  • Sports taping, bracing, and electrotherapy applications.
  • Post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation.
  • Performance enhancement and strength training.
  • Ergonomic and biomechanical analysis of movement.

Learning methods include:

  • On-field demonstrations and case-based discussions.
  • Use of advanced fitness and rehabilitation equipment.
  • Interdepartmental collaboration with orthopaedics and sports medicine units.
  • Research projects on athletic conditioning and recovery.

2. Clinical Training

Students gain intensive clinical exposure at reputed sports centers, health clubs, and in collaboration with orthopedic and rehabilitation hospitals.
They are trained to perform functional assessments, design return-to-play programs, and implement sports-specific therapy protocols.

Students are actively involved in:

  • Pre-participation screening and fitness assessments.
  • On-field injury management and taping techniques.
  • Strength and conditioning training.
  • Rehabilitation for ligament tears, sprains, and fractures.
  • Gait, posture, and movement analysis.

3. Clinical mentorship is provided by experienced physiotherapists specializing in musculoskeletal and sports rehabilitation.

The Sports Physiotherapy Unit provides specialized rehabilitation for acute and chronic sports injuries.
It focuses on restoring physical function, preventing recurrence, and optimizing athletic performance.

1.  Inpatient Services

The inpatient rehabilitation team provides physiotherapy services to athletes and orthopedic patients recovering from surgical procedures or severe injuries.
Services include:

  • Early post-operative rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction, meniscectomy, and joint replacement surgeries.
  • Mobilization and functional retraining for sports trauma and fractures.
  • Pain management using electrotherapy and manual therapy techniques.

2.  Outpatient Services

The outpatient clinic caters to athletes and individuals with:

  • Sports injuries such as sprains, strains, tendinitis, and dislocations.
  • Overuse injuries like tennis elbow, runner’s knee, and plantar fasciitis.
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation programs.
  • Strength and flexibility training for injury prevention.
  • Fitness programs for performance optimization.

3. Modalities used:

  • Electrotherapy: TENS, IFT, Ultrasound, LASER, SWD.
  • Manual therapy: Myofascial release, joint mobilization, PNF stretching.
  • Exercise therapy: Balance, plyometric, agility, and endurance training.

4. Working Hours

Monday to Saturday: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Sunday & Public Holidays: Closed
Sports emergency physiotherapy available during intercollegiate and university sports events.
